At this level the children are starting school and then progressing into Key Stage 1. Music Train continues to give a good grounding in general musicianship skills, providing a firm foundation from which to start learning an instrument. Parents / carers attend classes with the child, supporting them for some activities and encouraging independence for others. Sessions last for 45 minutes.

Children sing both as a group and also individually as confidence grows. They explore a range of percussion instruments, adding simple accompaniments to well- known songs, further developing rhythm skills. Pitch and simple musical notation covered in level 4 are consolidated and extended, leading to the use of conventional musical notation for those who are ready. All children begin to learn the recorder and have the opportunity to use other instruments associated with the Music Train topics being followed e.g. keyboards, guitars, brass / wind / string instruments. Activities continue to be varied and fun, with some follow-up ideas given to encourage home learning.
